My highest scoring Barolo of the vintage (out of over 300 reviewed so far), this gorgeous wine has heady aromas of violet, rose, baking spice and ripe, red berry. On the smooth, juicy palate, taut, polished tannins support succulent red cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and wild herbs. It's incredibly elegant, with alluring scents of perfumed blue flower, rose petal, woodland berry and a whiff of menthol. The focused graceful palate boasts fantastic tension, showing wild strawberry, crushed raspberry, star anise and cinnamon framed in taut polished tannins and vibrant acidity. 2001 Vintage Tasted: May 2015

Made from only Nebbiolo grapes grown in three vineyards in the Barolo township: Torriglione, Rué and San Lorenzo. This wine epitomizes a Barolo from Barolo, produced for decades by the historic Mascarello farming family. Today at helm is Maria Teresa, the daughter of Bartolo and granddaughter of Giulio, all great Barolo makers. This vintage 2001 was truly outstanding and emblematic and should be tasted to understand what a real Barolo from that area is like. The color was a distinct garnet of medium intensity and the bouquet had scents of violet and licorice but also light notes that were more gamy and balsamic giving it an authentic rustic style. The mouthfeel was distinct with an almost brackish acidity that dominated the edgy tannins. A wine for true Barolo lovers that may be difficult to understand for the untrained palate.

This producer has made an outstanding Barolo 2009—no easy feat in this vintage. This bottling is made from top vineyards in Barolo and La Morra. It has a gorgeous bouquet of rose, leather and a whiff of tar. The palate delivers a hint of carob, spice and succulent black cherry notes. Impeccably balanced, this is elegant and complex. A textbook Barolo.

Brilliant, rich ruby. Inviting, clear nose, with ripe fruit, raspberry and plum, with notes of rose petal in the background. Very juicy in the attack and on the palate, builds well, fine, dense tannins, very fine, multi-layered, long finish, a very elegant Barolo that will continue to develop for a long time to come.
